Rebuilding confidence
For children who have started to feel stuck, rushed, or discouraged in math and need a more dignified way back in.
Math Support in Portland
Math Mentorship is The Number Garden's ongoing approach to tutoring: individualized support for schoolwork, foundations, confidence, and deeper mathematical exploration.
Tutoring, Reframed
Families often begin by searching for a math tutor. Homework help, stronger foundations, and clearer explanations can all be part of the work here. But a student's relationship with mathematics is bigger than the assignment in front of them.
Mentorship makes room for continuity: someone who learns how a student thinks, notices what is changing, and can move between immediate support and richer questions over time. The goal is understanding, confidence, and fluency without shrinking mathematics to worksheet completion.
Who It Can Help
For children who have started to feel stuck, rushed, or discouraged in math and need a more dignified way back in.
For students who need steadier number sense, fluency, and conceptual grounding without pressure or rote drilling.
For curious students who want harder, more interesting problems than school math usually has room to offer.

The Ongoing Offer
Math Mentorship is the ongoing math-support offer at The Number Garden. It is not a separate add-on to tutoring. Each student has a consistent weekly place for focused guidance within the shared atmosphere of the studio.
What happens during that time depends on the student. One week may begin with schoolwork or a difficult concept; another may make room for a puzzle, project, or idea the student wants to pursue more deeply.
Membership is $195 per month and renews monthly until cancelled. A consistent weekly Tuesday time is arranged after the intro visit, with rolling enrollment as space allows.

Homework can be part of the conversation, but it is not the center of the work. The deeper goal is to help children understand mathematics more clearly and relate to it with more confidence.
Math Mentorship is currently designed for students ages 8-14. Families with younger children can explore Chess Studio or age-banded Math Circles.
Often, yes. A calmer mathematical culture can help children rebuild trust in their own thinking, especially when support is paced with care and without shame.
Yes. Many children need richer mathematical challenge, not more speed. The studio offers problems with room for conjecture, strategy, explanation, and depth.
